POTD - Aug 21
My biggest weakness is taking pictures of K (shes 4). I very, very rarely get it right - its so hard to get a natural expression from her - help!
These were both taken in portrait mode using the kit lens.
Top: 42mm, 160, f5.0, ISO 100
Bottom: 42mm, 200, f5.0, ISO 100.
Edit after CC: This is the SOOC version. The more I look at it, the more I am okay with it. What do you think? Hmm, still plan on trying to get her to pose for me again. Will have to wait til tomorrow... TFL!

I can totally relate to the problem you're having getting the natural look. Can't get it from my kids either.
Composition wise, I like the top one best. The bottom one leaves me feeling like there should be more below her. I feel like she's a cropped a little too short. One posing idea would be to have her with her back to the wall, head against the wall, with her head slightly rotated toward you and eyes real bright. If you ask her not to smile, you should get less of the squinty eyes and a more natural look.
the fisrt one seems more natural. the second one seems forced to me.kids are hard to work with!
I like the first one best too. I think its very cute - if you have photoshop you could saturate the colors a little more and maybe pop her eyes a little to brighten it up. Cute little girl!
I like the first one too. I think if you were slightly higher, she would have been looking right into the camera instead of tilting down ever so slightly. Eye level is a good place to be.
The second one might become a lot more fun if you filled the frame. Yeah, the camera messed up the focus a little, but that smile is too cute! Try cropping tigher.
I agree with Julie, don't ask for smiles. Just talk with her about whatever it is she loves, or some silly faily joke/story. You may not get the grinning smile, but the expression will be priceless.
Good for you for putting yourself out there for cc. You are off to a good start. And, I appreciate telling us you were focusing on composition!
She is a cutie.
You've gotten great advice on getting some natural smiles/expressions from her. I too like the first one the best. I might also suggest brightening these up a little in photoshop.
she is a cutie, even when you catch her making faces you can see how cute she is!
I like the first one the best also.
Thanks for the CC everyone! I will try these again this afternoon - my window with her and the camera is usually very short. :) I'll post my revisions this evening. Thanks again!
Cute pics!! Good job on that first one,I think it looks very apealling.
I can totally relate...my kids run when they see the camera! But that just makes me more determined....Try letting her pick a pose...that makes my almost five year old happy. I've gotten some CUTE pictures of her that way too.
Can't wait to see your next attempt...She's a doll though!
That is a tough age - I've got one around that size, as well. Mine will never hold still. Looks like you're on the right track, though.
They're both cute, but I like the first one better. My kids are the same way. About the only thing that I liked better about my p&s was the zoom. I could stand way back and not disturb them. Once they see the camera coming it's all over.
